For an October 26, 2000 concert in Toronto, Canada, Ontario Attorney General Jim Flaherty unsuccessfully tried to prevent Eminem from crossing the border, saying, "I personally don't want anyone coming to Canada who will come here and advocate violence against women." http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/story?id=114066&page=1

In addition to family members, several lawsuits have been brought against Mathers by others. A sanitation worker sued Mathers in 2001 in response to allegations that he had bullied Mathers while in school. The charges were dismissed. French jazz pianist Jacques Loussier filed a $10 million lawsuit against Eminem and Dr. Dre, on the basis that the beat for “Kill You” was plagiarized. The case was settled out of court.

Marshall Mather's mother sued him in 1999 for $10 million, claiming he slandered her in lyrics in The Slim Shady LP, but was only awarded $1,600 in damages in 2001.

On February 21, 2001 Elton John and Eminem performed "Stan" together at the 43rd Grammy Awards ceremony. GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) denounced Elton John for the performance, attacking Eminem's lyrics as homophobic. GLAAD held a protest outside the Staples Center where the ceremony was being held. Entertainment Weekly called the performance one of the best of the decade, stating, “it was the hug heard ‘round the world.”

“His [Eminem’s] lyrics encourage violence against gays and lesbians and women . . . We feel betrayed by Elton John, who has used his gayness for good and here he’s using it for evil." —R. S. Seomin, on Elton John/Eminem Grammy duet, February 20, 2001.

On December 8, 2003, the United States Secret Service admitted to investigating Eminem over allegations that he had threatened the President of the United States. The threat was supposedly made in the lyrics to the song “We As Americans,” which state, “Fuck money / I don’t rap for dead presidents / I’d rather see the president dead / It’s never been said, but I set precedents.” A heavily-censored version was later released as a separate track.

In May 2009, Eminem's 1996 debut album Infinite was made available on rapper 50 Cent’s website at Thisis50.ning.com

“Rap to me is a modern blues—a statement of how and where people are at, and art is a reflection of our society, and people don’t like to confront the realities in society. We dance forever around the issues, and [embrace] songs about unity and love. But until we really confront the truth, we are going to have a Tupac or Eminem or Biggie Smalls to remind us about it—and thank God. They force people to look at realities in society.” —Stevie Wonder on Eminem. MTV Online. February 21, 2001. http://www.mtv.com/news/articles

“I can’t stand him. He’s an absolutely horrible person and he gets worse every day. I vomit in my mouth whenever I’m around him or I hear his name. There’s nothing left in me for him. Nothing at all. He’s not very well endowed. If you’re going to have sex with Marshall, make sure you have a little blue pill, because otherwise it does not work.
