"Ruth,” Dr. Manse’s shrill voice echoed. “Would you be so kind as to read page eighty-seven? Tell us exactly what Anton said.”

The freckled red-head girl riffled through the pages. Tony saw the Vesperlighter crest on the back of her fuku blouse: a pale green aura surrounding a pair of clasped hands.

Ruth began, her voice deep. "...the largest of the Hellion leaped higher than I thought possible and gouged my neck with its claws. Blood gushed from my wound like a waterfall, and I fell in the midst of the bestial hoard. I was bitten relentlessly, but from somewhere deep inside my soul, I summoned a will to live. It was no mere dream then; it was a tussle with death itself. Rising from them like a god, the hellish children watched my ascent. I felt current raging through me, and I knew I was divine. I decided to burn them all up in a raging fire. They suffered in my vengeance, and they perished.”

…

Next class was Mechanics of Witchcraft with all six feet five inches of Madame Olga Ostrovsky. Unlike Mr. Manse, Madame Ostrovsky was early. She stood by her desk watching the students like a hawk as they piled into the class. She had a mean face; her default expression was a disdainful scowl bracketed by creases so deep they housed shadows. Her cheekbones jutted against her skin like knife points. Her lips were thin, taut, and black as charcoal. The sight of the woman both disgusted and intrigued Tony. Her eyes were sharp, flitting about in their sockets like whizzing marbles. Her head was tied with a black cloth, which made her resemble a fallen nun.

"We call her ‘moo’," Serafina whispered.

"What?" Tony asked, puzzled, finally taking his eyes off the woman.

"Moo," Serafina repeated. "Madame Olga Ostrovsky," she continued. "Appropriate acronym, isn't it? And no one can convince me she doesn't resemble a cow."

Tony couldn't help but laugh. Magnus shook his head.

"You know she has perfect hearing right?" he pointed out.

"Take out your textbooks and Obiscules," she shrilled. Her voice was high pitched, an austere drawl with an accent to it.

"Today we learn to do powerful spell, very powerful spell. Soulwhirlers should have good time today, I think."

She lifted an Obiscule from the table.

"Turn to page three fourteen."

Tony flipped through the thick pages and found the chapter entitled, 'Etherealism.'

"Hmmm. I think I've heard of this spell before," Magnus announced. "Crick mentioned it to us once."

Serafina flashed her head in the blond boy's direction. "Oh, I think you're right. The one he uses to light the bulbs," she chimed.

"Right. I’ve never actually seen him do it before though," Magnus said.

Madame Ostrovsky picked up a marker and wrote two words on the whiteboard."

'EXOMA ELECTRA'

"This is the spell for today," she said. "And like always, I will explain the name." She paused, and for a second, Tony thought she peered straight at him with her intense eyes.

"Magnus,” she shouted. “What does the first part of the name mean?"

Magnus stood beside him. "Madame, the first part of the name, 'ex' means out— or to come out of.
