CAMILA

It had been three months, almost to the day, since my plane crash.

Mid-December, full on Christmas season.

The fireworks over Uptown had been spectacular. The red and green lights all along Post Oak were perfectly synchronized and the tree in the Galleria was as grand as it always was.

The lights twinkled along with the Christmas music blasting over the speakers.

I tucked my hands into my light blue wool coat—I never seemed to be able to get warm enough anymore—and watched my six-year-old niece make a perfect axel jump. Her skates sliced into the ice, enveloping her in a magical sparkle lasting only a second.

Sophia was the only girl on the ice. Two other girls, older, probably eight or nine, had come in and were giggling at something as they laced their skates on.

Nothing like Sophia. I know she enjoyed skating, but she took it seriously. And she never skated with friends. As far as I knew, she didn’t even have any friends, but that was another matter. Neither did I for the most part.

Otherwise the Galleria was deserted. It had taken some pull to get Sophia scheduled on the ice this early in the morning. Six o’clock was usually the earliest they let anyone in. Sophia had started skating nearly an hour ago at five.

Since Sophia came to the ice rink every morning, someone had to bring her. Driven as she was, it took a village to get her here. I had volunteered. I liked the routine of it. The uniqueness.

I’d heard some talk that Sophia’s parents were considering building a new home, right here in Houston, with a private ice rink right in the middle of it.

There was no doubt that Sophia was on an Olympic bound track. She would rather ice-skate than anything. Dolls? No. Computer games? No way. Dress up? Only if it involved a skating dress.

Personally, I thought she was still young and only time would tell if she would tire of the sport. But everyone else seemed certain that her laser-focused passion was leading her on a straight-path to the Olympics.

I had to admit, she reminded me of myself once I’d started solo flying. It was like an addiction that I couldn’t tame.

But for these three months, the only time I had been on an airplane had been when Grandpa Noah had flown me back to Houston after the doctors had given me permission to even board an airplane.

Although my request for my grandfather to be the one to fly me home had set off a wave of grumblings, I did not care. He was the one person I trusted completely. The best pilot in existence as far as I was concerned.

There were so many others who wanted what they seemed to see as the privilege of getting me home. My older brother. My twin brother.

My boyfriend.

The music changed to a romantic, happy tune that used to bring me joy. Now it just made me sad.

Despite the festiveness of the season, I had no joy for it in me.
