Chapter 20

Ella

“You’re promoting me?” I gasp in disbelief.

Mrs. Glenn sends me a sympathetic smile and nods.

“Yes, you’re no longer an intern, but a research assistant,” she confirms. “Provided that is what you want, of course.”

“Yes! Yes, of course!” I pipe, almost jumping up from my chair.

It’s been three days since our successful presentation at the governor’s office, and when Mrs. Glenn called me into her office this afternoon, my heart instantly hiccupped with excitement. She has been extra nice to me for the past couple of days and the way she complimented me right after the meeting was so unusual that it was easy to assume she had good news for me.

I’d been hoping for this promotion, but I did not expect it to happen this soon. After all, the contract for my internship still lasts for another two months.

“And... I’ll start this position after my internship ends, or—”

“If you don’t mind, I’d like for this to be effective immediately,” she interrupts me. “Starting next week.”

“Next week?” I repeat in disbelief. I can’t believe what I’m hearing, this is all too good to be true. “That’s... wow, yes, thank you!”

“Wonderful,” Mrs. Glenn says, looking very pleased with herself. “We’ll move you down the corridor. You’ll share an office with Toby. I’m sorry we can’t offer you your own space right now, but it beats sitting out in the entrance area, right?”

I nod enthusiastically. I don’t really know much about Toby, other than the fact that he works in accounting for Mrs. Glenn’s department, and loves spaghetti and meatballs for lunch. He sometimes joined Caroline and me at the cafeteria, but never talked much. He seems nice, but withdrawn and quiet, which is probably a good quality for an office mate.

“Yes, absolutely! I don’t mind sharing an office with Toby. I’m just very grateful for this opportunity. Thank you so much.”

She chuckles and waves me off. “You have nothing to thank me for, Ella. You earned this. You really impressed me. We all fail and stumble here and there, but it takes true strength to get up on your feet and go on. You did that—and then some. Not many people would’ve managed what you did with those quick revisions.”

I feel myself blushing at her words. Mrs. Glenn has never praised me like this. In fact, no one has ever showered me with so much praise. I’m not used to it at all, so obviously, I have no idea how to handle it.

“Th-thank you,” I stutter again, unsure where to look. “I won’t let you down, I promise.”

“I’m confident you won’t,” she says. “Well, okay then. We should have a contract ready for you by the end of next week.”

“Okay,” I say, slowly rising from my chair. “And... so, um, should I wait until—”

“Oh, no, you’re still starting on Monday, the contract is just a formality,” Mrs. Glenn cuts me off again. “Toby will help you get settled at your new space tomorrow.”

“Thank you,” I say again, even adding a little bow, before I finally make my way out of Mrs.
