MOLLY FELT AS if she’d just dodged a bullet. She was so wired by that tense exchange between her and the sheriff that she jumped at the knock on her door. She was afraid to open it, afraid it would be the lawman and that this time neither of them would call a halt to what had almost happened before. Her heart was still hammering, her blood running hot, desire simmering in places she’d seldom if ever felt before.

“Georgia,” she said as she opened the door to the insurance woman. She felt a wave of relief—and disappointment that it wasn’t the sheriff.

“I thought you might want to go to lunch. Are you all right?” The woman turned to look back down the hallway at the sheriff’s retreating back. “Been doing a little entertaining in your room?” Georgia chuckled as if she was joking, but her look when she turned back was probing.

“Lunch,” Molly said, needing fresh air and to escape the feelings the sheriff had evoked in her as well as to get out of her hotel room. Right now, she would go anywhere Georgia suggested.

“You don’t seem all right,” Georgia said as they walked down the hallway to the stairs. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost.” Her eyes widened. “You haven’t seen a ghost, have you?”

Molly shook her head. “I need air.” She turned toward the fire escape stairs. She knew that the sheriff wouldn’t want her talking to anyone about the ransom demand, so she couldn’t blame that for her apparent frightened expression. “I met my grandparents this morning and survived it. Barely.”

She pushed open the door and descended the fire escape. When they reached the bottom, , they headed down the alley to the café. “Seriously? You talked to your grandparents?” Georgia said, having to trot to catch up with her.

“It was more than strange and a whole lot disconcerting. My grandfather had his shotgun loaded the entire time and my grandmother...” She shook her head. “I think she loved my father. I don’t think she knew he was murdered let alone that he’d been nearby in Fortune Creek.”

“Do you think one of them killed him?” Georgia asked.

“I don’t know. I’m not sure I want to know.” Her thoughts kept shifting back to the sheriff, the heat of his look. She licked her lips unconsciously and tried to breathe. The last thing she needed to do was get involved with the cowboy sheriff. She couldn’t trust her emotions right now—even if he wasn’t the sheriff of Fortune Creek, Montana and she didn’t live thousands of miles away in New York City.

Her libido teased her with the thought of a fling. Except that she didn’t do flings and she had a feeling that neither did the sheriff.

Georgia was talking but she was barely listening as she pushed open the door to the café. “Hey, ladies. I just need to step out for a few minutes,” Alice called. “I’m going to run some of my chicken soup over to May Greenly.
