Chapter 5

“You can save my chowder tonight, Mom, I’m going out.”

“Not for pizza? Now, Truman—”

“No, I’m going over to a friend’s place.”

Her eyes lit up. “You have a date?”

I’d had a haircut that morning, and came home with a new shirt—it didn’t take a genius to read the clues. But was it a date, having my buddy teach me to cook? I wouldn’t have thought so if a woman had been my buddy.

I dodged the issue by saying, “It’s a friend from Luvaloss.”

“You’re having a taster session! Even better.” She bustled over to our store of packages. “What are you taking along? Cookies, energy bars … you don’t want chowder?”

“I don’t need any of that stuff.” Maybe it was time I came clean. I took a deep breath. “Listen, Mom, I’m not—”

She spoke right over me. “You have enough in the car already? That’s my boy. Like I always taught you, carry it everywhere, and you’ll never be without a sample for a prospect. But here, these are new. Cookies in key lime pie flavor.”

She pressed a bright green package into my hands.

What was a man to do? I’d tried to tell her, but she wouldn’t listen. If I took the cookies, maybe I could at least talk to Brad about this. To be open with one person would be a huge step.

In the hallway I opened the green carton, tore the wrapper off one of the cookies, and bit into it. A new flavor—maybe it would taste better? But no, it was like dish soap.

I slipped a couple into my pocket anyway, and put the carton in the trunk. I could have Brad taste them, so he’d understand what I was up against.

Mom called after me, “Knock ’em dead, big guy!”

Big guy. I wished I could have gone to see Brad without that echoing in my ears.
