Sorry, I was in a meeting.

Chatting with you is great and everything, but I miss the sight of you.

If you’re interested, I can send a driver to pick you up and we’ll have dinner.

My breath catches as I read the words over again, trying to process their meaning. That sounds like a date. A real date. With Damien. In a burst of anxiety and excitement, I agree.

That sounds great. I’m making my way back home from the grocery store. Give me twenty.

Anticipation builds in my chest as I rush home, leave my groceries on top of the kitchen island, and change into a cute dress. It’s like an itch I can’t quite scratch, a need for something more than what my life has been offering so far.

I reach the pavement with my phone in hand, only then remembering I never told Damien my address. The heat of the day seems to reflect my inner turmoil, and I fan myself with my hand.

A black car pulls up next to me, and the window rolls down to reveal a man in his forties wearing a suit.

“Emma Bright?” he asks.

My jaw drops. “Yes?”

The man jumps out of the car and makes his way to the back door. “Mr. Blackwood sent me to pick you up.” He opens the door for me.

How strange. I don’t remember sending Damien my address. With a shrug, I slide into the cool leather seat.

As the car glides through the streets, I find my thoughts wandering back to Damien. His magnetic presence draws me in like a moth to a flame, and I wonder what it is about him that’s so captivating. Is it his dark, brooding demeanor? Or perhaps the hint of vulnerability beneath his guarded exterior? Whatever it is, I can’t seem to resist it.

When the car pulls up to a sleek glass building, my nerves spike. The driver opens my door, and I step out onto the curb, feeling underdressed in my summer dress as I take in the scene before me. There’s a sense of power that emanates from the building, and I feel a strange thrill at the thought of entering it.

I should have asked him where we’re having dinner. Maybe I should have put something better, even though I can’t stand another second in the dresses my father bought me.

A blond woman rises behind the front desk when I walk in. She gives me a quick once-over, then opens a yellow smile.

“Miss Emma Bright?” she asks, disbelief coloring her voice.

“That’s me.”

She tuts. “Mr. Blackwood is waiting for you at his office. Thirty-second floor.”

That’s a tall building. “Thank you.”

The elevator takes me up in no time at all. I fidget as I walk into an open space, my low heels clicking on the marble floors. The afternoon sun bathes the expanse in orange light.

Slick lines dominate the space, with towering windows offering views of the bustling city below. People in suits and pencil skirts stride through the hall.

And yet, they all seem to pause and glance at me.
