“Will you tell them that I’m blind?” he asks over breakfast.

We’re naked, sitting up in bed, with the drapes pulled back and the sun hot on our bare knees. There is a tray between us, empty now, save for the crumbs and two teacups.

“I don’t have to. How should I describe you?”

“As I am. As you found me.”

I’m quiet for a moment.

And then he adds, “As you’ve dreamt of me.”

We wake, but there is always darkness.

And so he comes to me by touch, feeling his way through the sheets with slow, tentative sweeps of his hands. There is a restrained, quiet unease to his searching, as if he needs to reassure himself, as if he needs to be sure of me.

In this way we find each other: in the dark, desperately.

I’d like to think that I know his hands, the curve and bend of each finger. I pretend that I do, that I have felt his touch all my life, and can tell his from any other’s.

It is the lover’s dream, to be so completely known and to know completely.

We pretend at it, hoping that time will fill in the blanks.
