Chapter Sixteen

They left early for the hour-and-a-half drive from Sacramento into the San Francisco Bay Area. It took them a little longer to find the Harford estate, which was nestled in the hillside a little outside Sausalito.

“Okay, this is it.” Lisa pointed at the twenty-foot-high gates of intricately designed wrought iron. “Harford estate. Right here for everyone to see.”

Johnny slowed the rental to a crawl and scowled out his window. “It ain’t nothin’ but gates.”

“Well, it’s not particularly surprising that they have a gigantic piece of land, is it?”

“Are you sure that’s the right address?”

“Of course I’m sure.”

He sniffed and finally rolled the SUV to a complete stop before he fixed her with a skeptical gaze. “Did your friend in the San Fran PD give you their address too?”

“Wow. You truly think that’s how it is.” She shook her head, pulled her tablet out of the glove box, and tapped for a moment before she held it under his nose. “There. Right there. It’s public record for everyone to see.”

“That don’t mean—”

“And there’s this.” She scrolled across the screen and pulled up an online news clip. “This is dated from three days ago. ‘Harford Foundation Announces It’s Fiftieth Annual Charity Gala Only Months After Family Tragedy.’”

Johnny didn’t bother to scan the article but studied the picture of the front gates that perfectly matched those across the street. “You put the GPS in for a banquet hall, darlin’.”

“Oh, really?” Lisa cleared her throat and continued with the body of the article. “‘This year, like every year, The Harford Foundation’s Bright Minds Charity Gala will still be held as planned on Sausalito’s Harford Family Estate in Marin County. Although why the organization’s founder, Jasper Harford himself, chose to uphold this longstanding tradition a few scant months after the tragic death of his son’s—’”

“Yeah, yeah, all right. I get it.”

“On the Harford estate.” She tapped the tablet again. “The family estate. Right here.”

“I get it, Lisa. Put that damn thing away before I throw it out the window to announce our grand entrance.”

With a smirk, she turned the tablet off and closed it in the glove box. “Honestly, though, that article was weird.”

“Beyond how many times they could squeeze the word Harford into the first couple sentences?”

“It’s simply part of the sensationalism and that was certainly a sensationalist piece of writing. I’m not sure why anyone would want to harp on this family so much. Sure, they have pots of money, but this is California. The charity gala raises money to help send the ten best-performing high school students from every school to the college of their choice, not only from every district. Every single high school—and it’s a full ride.”

“It sounds like Jasper Harford is either tryin’ to make waves in the community or hidin’ somethin’ big.”

“Yeah, like the fact that his son’s soon-to-be-fiancée was murdered and all of San Francisco wants to hear about it but can’t.”

Johnny turned the engine off and studied her for a long moment. “Do you have
