“Did anyone disturb you as you were coming in?” Tony the doorman asked as I was walking in. I asked him what he meant, and he said that earlier there was a homeless person that he had to shoo away from outside. This wasn't the neighborhood to get homeless people, and it was a little surprising, but at the same time this was a city. So, I just kind of waved it off and told him not to worry about it.

“There was also a disturbance upstairs in the penthouse just a little while ago.”

“What kind of disturbance?”

“Sounded like things were being broken, one of the windows was broken out from the inside. We had to call the police,” Tony relayed, obviously nervous.

“Why didn't you lead with that?” I asked as I went to the elevator. I asked him before it closed if the police were still there, and he said that they weren't. What had happened? Was Mavis okay? I could worry about what was broken later. I was specifically worried about Mavis. When I asked Tony if they had found anyone in the apartment, he said strangely they hadn't. He imagined that somebody had gone out through the back, so he had no idea who it was.

They were looking into video surveillance on the outside of the building, but he wasn't too hopeful. I just kept wondering what the hell. It took an agonizingly long time to get upstairs. Before it had been so helpful, the extra time needed to complete the task at hand, but now it was taking forever. I wanted to get to Mavis. I was still under the impression that she was going to be there. Maybe she was hiding. I had all these crazy scenarios running through my head of what-if and it was downright exhausting. By the time I got to the door of my apartment, Mavis had died 10,000 ways in my head, and I really just needed to see her, to make sure she was alright.

When I got upstairs, the place was trashed, and even as I called out to Mavis, I knew that she wasn't going to be there. Something had happened, and while I knew nobody else should have been there, I knew that Mavis wouldn't have done this, so I was trying to desperately figure it out. None of this made any sense.

I called out to her a few more times as I quickly walked through the penthouse, but my voice was lower. I think I was more worried about somebody being there that wasn't supposed to be there then Mavis. Had she done this? At first, I couldn’t even consider it, but there was nobody else supposed to be up there. I'd left her up there and the place was trashed. And she was gone. What other assumption was I supposed to make? Deep down though, I couldn’t believe this was her.

When I started looking around, there were a couple of sculptures that were knocked over with such force that they had broken.
