Chorleywood

There’s a nice sold-out gathering in the Chorleywood Bookshop, including my eldest niece who is on a date. It shows a great deal of trust in an uncle to risk taking a possible partner to watch him give a talk about the potential of extraterrestrial life and the possible existence of spitting night-hags when suffering from sleep paralysis. I decide to drop the bit about night-hags – it might be introducing too much family madness for a first date.

At the signing a mother shows me the most beautiful tattoo. It is the pale-blue dot colliding with the mind of Douglas Adams. It is in memory of a child she lost. Times like this crush cynicism. I stand up in front of people and spill out the stories in my head, and then afterwards they often give me their stories. I am glad people feel they can share their stories too.
