Alex allowed herself to be comforted by the warrior only a few more minutes before pulling away abruptly, a wave of guilt washing over her. Nantane reached for the damp cloth and spoke softly. “I will sit with him. Please rest.”

Alex did not want to leave his side. But she knew the warrior would watch over him just as vigilantly, and she needed the sleep. Gathering the last two blankets, she made a sleeping area on the floor. As she did so she told the warrior, “I think the children took the rest of the blankets. I only need one. You may have this one.”

“I do not need anything. I have my things with me when I wish to sleep. I will stay awake with Jacob tonight.”

Alex nodded, knowing the warrior would not be dissuaded. As she tried to settle and drift off, she could not stop thinking about Nantane and how she looked when Alex left her in the woods a year ago. There had been too much pain, too many emotions warring inside her. It had been more than she was capable of handling. Caleb’s death, her pregnancy, the violence of the Huron raid, the time in the village, Nantane’s intense friendship, and the sudden revelation of her and Malila was more than her body and mind could process. Part of her was so angry at the warrior that day and for a long time after. She did not even know why. She just knew that looking at her in the woods, in the last moment they would share for a year, and thinking of her in the weeks after made her feel frustrated and angry. It was better she’d left.

Now Nantane was suddenly here, thrust back into her life. Whether it was coincidence or fate she did not know, but it was clear time healed the anger she had previously borne, leaving only warmth in its wake. It dawned on her as she drifted off she’d missed Nantane more than she realized.
