Chapter Twenty-One
The wind howled through the still open window in Seanâs cabin, the ocean beyond sparkling red in the light of the fading sun. Ever since Sean had deposited her back there, Emery had been sitting behind the desk, hugging her knees with her head pressed against the wall beside the window. Looking out had helped ease the turmoil in her head, but the fear and humiliation still seethed under her skin. The way those men had been prepared just to toss her into the sea, like she was nothing, like something diseased and totally unwantedâ¦and she kept feeling the tentacles wrapping around her wrists, her ankles, pulling her under.
Sheâd now be digesting in the beastâs belly if it hadnât been for the Forbiddens. Sean especially had taken great risk to save her life, literally leaping into the reach of a monster to pull her back to safety.
After heâd brought her back to the cabin and set her on the bed, heâd repeatedly asked if she was injured. Sheâd insisted she was fine, despite the quaking of her limbs. Wanting to be alone with her torrent of emotions, she then asked him to leave. He only hesitated for a moment before slipping through the door and shutting it quietly behind him.
Since then, all through the afternoon and into evening, no one had so much as come to the door.
She shook her head and buried her face in her hands. Why had he gone to such lengths to save her? Just to have the pleasure of killing her himself when the time came? Was his vendetta against Tavor so extreme? She couldnât believe that, not anymore. He had chosen to rescue her, chosen not to harm anyone on the cargo ship, even though the options of letting her die and leaving the other sailors with nothing would arguably have been easier.
She had to talk to him. She needed answers, and she also owed him some sort of thanks.
She opened the cabin door to a soft murmuring of voices. As she began to step out the voices hushed, and someone began to sing.
Oh, the sea is a grand and wondrous thing.
With its waves that crash and its winds that sing.
It's a place of adventure and mystery,
where anything is possible, as long as you believe.
With a compass in hand and a heart full of dreams,
we'll explore the world and chase down our schemes.
With a song on our lips, the sails fill with a crack,
we'll dance with the waves and the wind at our backs.
