While Rubio, Cruz, and Paul debated things like debt and deficits, government surveillance and due process, Trump was lighting up audiences with raw, unadulterated—dare I say?—truth. At one point, Trump flat out said he donated money to politicians to get favors. He said he donated to Republicans, and had no qualms boldly stating he also gave to Democrats.

“I will tell you that our system is broken. I gave to many people. Before this, before two months ago, I was a businessman. I give to everybody. When they call, I give. And do you know what? When I need something from them two years later, three years later, I call them. They are there for me. And that’s a broken system.”

Wow!

Think about that for a second. Someone running to secure the nomination of the Republican Party openly stated that he donated money to Democrats.

In that moment, Trump did what only the best candidates and debaters do—he took his weakness and made it his strength. Trump flaunted the fact that he donated to prominent Democrats—including the Clintons!—and then flipped it to state something that appealed to so many Americans: This is what’s wrong with Washington! Rich people give money to get favors!

As Bush and Kasich proudly talked about their gubernatorial records, Trump talked about his success as a businessman, employing thousands of people and building a net worth of billions. Maybe “talked” is the wrong word. He bragged. He ranted. He went off on tangents that sometimes made no sense. The crowds ate it up.

Donald Trump understands something that most Republicans do not: it’s not what you say; it’s how they feel.

Trump understands the power of emotion. Conservatives, with a political philosophy based on facts, figures, and statistics, often don’t understand that, or they have a hard time expressing it in a way that touches people’s hearts.

Emotion drives adoration, poll numbers, and votes. Numbers, statistics, and résumés do not.

With his star appeal, his cult-like following, and his emotional drive, do you know who Donald Trump became? A Republican type of Obama.

Sounds crazy, right? Stay with me here.

For years, conservatives desperately searched to find their “Republican Obama,” a counterweight to the powerful and well-liked liberal. Longtime political consultants—in all of their wisdom—pointed to Marco Rubio, the junior senator from Florida with a powerful backstory as a son of Cuban immigrants and a heck of a speaker. Rubio, too, could light up a room, but in a different way. Others thought it was Rand Paul, the libertarian firebrand who appealed to Democrats and young people throughout the country…allegedly.

Speakers who know how to captivate people understand that basically two emotions compel and capture people: love and hate. Obama was quintessential love, hope, and optimism. He had people lining up by the thousands to see him speak. Musicians were writing hits about him. Schools were devoting classroom songs to him. He was an icon, a beloved figure. He even won a Nobel Peace Prize just before sending drones and the military into parts of the Middle
