Brom's vision faded to darkness and he found himself standing before Mara's tomb once more. A quick scan of his surroundings revealed nothing but shadows lurking in the bleak depths of the catacombs. The skeletal statues that flanked the hall watched over the empty corridor in deathly silence.

Images swarmed his mind and memories whirled around him as he tried to make sense of all that had transpired. Looking down at his clothes, he saw that he was dressed in the same black tunic and cloak he had been wearing when he entered the tunnels below the Tower. He reached beneath his shirt and felt his chest for the wound Mara had opened, but there was no injury or scar. Everything that happened from the moment he first laid hands upon the Dark Queen's crypt had been nothing more than a terrible dream—a nightmarish vision conjured by Mara's unholy sorcery.

Brom now knew the truth. He had discovered the sinister secret of the catacombs—the undying evil that lay entombed here at the labyrinth's end—and he vowed to sacrifice his life and soul, if need be, in order to keep the Dark Queen from ever rising again. He turned from Mara's tomb, but before he could take a step, a whisper crept from the darkness behind him. The faint sound rose to a ghostly murmur that seemed to call his name. He felt the icy caress of cold fingers sprawling across his chest, and he shuddered as Mara's final words echoed inside his head. "Fate has brought you to me for a reason."
