Chapter Fifteen
Finn came to an abrupt halt just inside the door of The Peach Pit and took in the two women. One blonde, one brunette. Both beautiful as fuck.
Since the gun on his ankle would set off the metal detector, he didnât go any further. To avoid that, he wouldâve entered through the employee door but when he tried it, it was locked.
While that was a good thing for the womenâs safety, it wasnât so good for him.
âIâm so sorry about your mom!â exclaimed the dark-haired hostess, rushing over from behind the counter and through the metal detector to give him a breath-robbing hug.
He blinked. What?
From over Sapphireâs shoulder as she continued to squeeze the stuffing out of him, he saw Mel come over to stand slightly behind the hostess. She bugged out her eyes at him in a silent message. One that made him realize Mel must have made up some sort of story. Unfortunately, he had no idea what it was.
His eyes sliced from Mel back to Sapphire as the woman pulled away.
âOh⦠Thanks. Itâs been⦠difficult.â A warning, even by text, wouldâve been nice so he wouldnât have walked into an unknown situation.
Mel gave him a thumbs up and a grimace.
âI can only imagine. Well, hopefully sheâs not in too much pain.â
For fuckâs sake. âFortunately, sheâs not.â
âOh, thatâs a relief.â
As soon as Sapphire went back through the metal detector, Mel swapped places with her. She grabbed him by the elbow and turned him toward the door. âPhire, can you keep an eye on things for a few minutes? I need to grab some fresh air.â
âOf course. Take your time.â She gave them an exaggerated wink.
He raised his eyebrows at Mel and only received a slight shake of her head in response before she shoved him out the door. She kept them moving until they were far away from the entrance.
When she finally stopped, they stood at the corner of the building in the shadows where no one could overhear them.
âHello, girlfriend,â he greeted, then leaned in and pressed his lips to her cheek. âSo, what was that about?â
âLet me preface this by stating that I hate lying to my friend and best employee.â She blew out a breath. âTo set up the whole dating scenario, I told her we hooked up last night and weâre going to see where things go between us. I also instructed her to not confiscate your phone when you come in. However, when she balked at that, I had to quickly come up with an excuse. Other than the real reason, of course. I explained your motherâs very ill and her nurse needs to be able to contact you at a momentâs notice.â
He narrowed his eyes on her. âHow sick?â
âLike hospice-type sick.â
Damn. âWhile thatâs a good excuse, my mother would most likely disagree. Did you tell her with what? I donât want to be caught off guard if she asks me any questions.â
âNo.â
It kind of creeped him out to say this butâ¦
