Andrei tells me that in the moment the mountaintop ceased to exist, my mother suddenly stiffened, started to scream then, realizing that volume of it would likely carry beyond the walls of our house, buried her face in the blanket she had wrapped around him, her body shaking, her breath broken from sobs.

“I have to go to him,” Helen said and Andrei, understanding, ripped at an old wound I had made on his neck, pulled my mother close. “Take whatever you need,” he said, “and take me with you.”

She touched love, both his and hers, and fear. These were natural emotions when neither of them knew where any of us were. And they moved at the speed of thought away from the house, from the town, brushing my mind then, seeing that Michael and I were all right, moving on to the mountain shrouded at its base in snow, veiled at the top with a lethal manmade fog.

Andrei stroked her hair with a trembling hand, as if he comforted a child, murmuring, “It will be all right, all right, all right.”

Though of course nothing would be the same again, the pain of that moment, held perfectly within each of us, would be resurrected at each winter gathering at the point in the ceremony when we allow ourselves to mourn our dead.
