Conclusion
To the extent that respondents in this sample are similar to the much larger population of formerly incarcerated persons, this study suggests that hundreds of thousands of individuals released each year perceive themselves to be âtypical former prisoners.â There appears to be little hope among formerly incarcerated persons who identify as more typical former prisoners that they can âearn redemptionâ (Bazemore 1999) and rejoin society as accepted conventional members of the community. Thus, thinking of oneself as a typical former prisoner appears to have an individual âoff-trackâ and not on the road to successful reentry and desistance. As Farrall and colleagues (2014; see also LeBel et al. 2008) suggest, â[p]erhaps the principal lesson to be drawn is that those working with people trying to desist should recognize the need to engender hope first and foremostâ (p. 215).
