KENDRA OPENED THE MAP I’d gotten of Ashland and looked at it as we walked down the road. We stayed in the center of the road, which may or may not have been a good idea. It meant we’d be easier targets for other humans, but I wasn’t really scared of other humans the way I probably should have been.

I was much more concerned about zombies coming up, running at me, or grabbing me when I wasn’t looking.

“What did you find?” I asked Kendra as we walked. She folded up the map and shoved it in her back pocket. Now I had two maps, and she had one. I didn’t care.

“We need a place to stay for tonight, but we should be able to get the little one to her dad in the morning. If all goes well, we should be able to be at his address by noon.”

“Really?” Riley seemed excited.

“How long has it been since you’ve seen your dad?” I asked.

“Maybe a week,” she told us.

A week.

It didn’t seem like that long.

It was hard to me to believe that a couple had separated during the end of the world, but it wasn’t really my place to judge. It was, however, my place to make sure we got this kid safely to her destination one way or another.

“A long time,” I finally said.

“Do you think he remembers me?”

Riley’s question caught me off-guard, and I looked at her sharply. I wasn’t really sure what she meant. Did kids really think their parents would just forget about them after a couple of days of being away from each other?

I’d never known my dad. He’d been out of the picture long before the infection came, which meant I had never had a dad to miss. Even after my mom passed away from cancer, I’d never really thought about him. In my opinion, if he had wanted to get to know me, he’d had plenty of chances for that.

He’d never taken advantage of any of them, so I figured he’d never really cared.

With Riley, though, things were different. She did know her dad, and she knew perfectly well that he loved her. What she wanted to know was if he missed her...if he remembered her. My heart kind of hurt a little bit as I looked at her.

Luckily, Kendra had it under control. She stopped walking and turned to Riley.

“Riley, do you love your daddy?”

“Yes.”

“And do you miss him when you’re away?”

“Yes.”

“Well, I want you to think about this,” Kendra knelt down so she was eye-to-eye with Riley. This was less imposing, and it made her seem less scary.

“Think about what?”

“Your daddy knew about you before you were even born, Riley.”

Riley nodded.

“He loved you before you even arrived. He rubbed your mom’s belly every day waiting for you, and when you arrived, they both knew you were a little miracle.”

Fuck, my eyes were tearing up a little bit. Bringing a kid into the world had been hard before the apocalypse. I knew that Kendra was right.
