Chapter 16

Kyle

Sitting in the waiting room of the attorney’s office, I stared down at my phone, the text from Marissa almost mocking me. Harper had let me off two hours early so I could go see this lady while Luke was in daycare.

“Kyle? You can go in now,” said the young receptionist, pointing me to the Cherrywood door set next to her desk.

I stood slowly and hobbled to the door, switching Lucy’s leash to my other hand so I could open it. I saw the receptionist eyeing not only my service dog, but my prosthetic as she sat there. I wore shorts today because it was just too damn hot to give a crap about people staring.

The attorney, Jayne C. Miller her door plaque read, stood and put her hand out for me to shake. She smiled a set of perfectly white teeth, and then brushed a strand of dark brown hair from her eye. She looked to be in her late forties.

“Have a seat, Mr. Adams,” she said, pointing to a chair.

I obeyed and waited for her to speak.

After adjusting some papers on her desk, she smiled. “Cute dog. What’s his name?”

I petted my dog’s head and grinned. “Lucy.”

“Oh, well she’s adorable. Now, what can I do for you, Mr. Adams?”

“I need to file for divorce from my wife.”

“That I can help you with. I do have a retainer fee of five hundred dollars, just so you know.”

I nodded. “I know. I can pay that. What other expenses?”

“There will be a couple hundred more for me to file the paperwork, and if I have to go to court for you, it will start to add up.”

I shook my head. “I don’t think it’ll get that far. Marissa’s been pretty much M.I.A. for almost two years. I would have filed sooner if I had known where she was.”

She furrowed her eyebrows. “And you know where she is now?”

I nodded and swiped the phone screen and showed her the text. “She’s staying in Miami. I asked her to come up here for this and she couldn’t be bothered. This is her address.”

Jayne took the phone from me and, slipping on a pair of red reading glasses, grabbed a pen and sticky note and jotted down the address. “How do you spell her name?”

I recited the spelling, to include Adams.

She handed the phone back, and turned to her computer. I waited patiently while she began typing, the screen I couldn’t see due to a black privacy filter on it. “Are there children?”

“Yes, one,” I replied on a sigh.

“His or her full name please?” she asked, fingers poised over the keyboard.

“Lucas Mitchell Adams. He’s five.”

“Date of birth?” she asked.

I told her, and then she proceeded to ask if I had his social security number and where he was born. Then she launched into questions about my income, if I knew where or if Marissa even worked, and her personal info. I found it sad that, aside from the technical details about her like her date of birth, and now, apparently her address, I didn’t know anything else.
