15 - ROB

The glitz and glamor of Dispatch was quickly wearing off.

Also, I was seriously starting to debate how smart it had been for me to come with Andy on this journey.

Of course it had sounded like a great adventure—and it was. I certainly got to experience things I’d likely not have, had I stayed home. Most of it was fun… kind of. I certainly didn’t miss all the chores I would have had to do at home that were shoved on someone else now, albeit I was very aware that we were both operating on borrowed time there. Those chores—and plenty more—would still be waiting for us.

But one thing was true: the main reason I had agreed to tag along proved to be absolutely unnecessary. My sister certainly didn’t need a keeper.

Andy fit in at Dispatch like a fish in water. While driving inside, the walls had clearly stressed her out, but once she had gotten over that, the city was a piece of cake for her. Getting into that fight was the single event anyone could have considered trouble in our entire stay, and I’d actually been glad she got the chance to let out steam. Also, that bitch really had it coming!

After that, everything was smooth sailing for her.

The masses of bodies; the stench; the noise—nothing seemed to faze her. That people every so often stared at her she was borderline oblivious of, or else she brushed it off with little heed paid. The only thing that actually seemed to concern her was that she could eat to her heart’s content, which after the first day wasn’t abnormally much, anyway. She didn’t let anyone else talk her into stupid behavior like getting into more fights or drinking alcohol until she blacked out; although the latter I would have loved to watch. One good thing about my sister’s weird stoicism was that she was virtually immune to peer pressure, but it would have been fun to see anyone try. No such luck with Evan or Sylvie, though, which was a good thing.

I was glad we’d met them. Andy got along great with Evan—and for the most part ignored everyone else. No surprise there since she usually got along best with guys and non-girly girls. I was kind of waiting for him to read too much into it, but at least during our stay in Dispatch, that didn’t seem to be an issue. Sylvie seemed to be more surprised about that, confessing late on day two that Evan was usually a loner who kept to the fringes of their group, happy to tag along but only participating so much. It made perfect sense that he and my sister would get along.

It mostly irked me because she seemed oh so content while I was feeling kind of… lackluster about the garishness of Dispatch.

After being on the road for three weeks, anything was better than being confined to a car. The same had been true for that settlement a few days ago that Andy hadn’t seemed to like much.
