STEP 2: DOWN IN MOTION AT YOUR SIDE

Begin with the dog, on a “let’s go” command, attentively at your side. Command “down,” then drop on your left knee as you slide your left hand down the leash to the collar and push straight down to the floor so that your hand is palm down flat against the floor. If the dog resists and keeps his hind end in the air, maintain your position and wait. With some resistant dogs you can have food in your left hand and encourage them to follow the food to the floor. As the dog relaxes, stop using the food. When the dog is collapsing before your hand gets to the floor, go on to the next step.
