Chapter Fourteen

Trina watched the exchange between Rosalie and Arty, taking some pleasure in seeing

Arty's eyes widen and his face change color several times. He was still in his uniform and

must have stopped by on his way home from work. Trina also surmised that Arty had

stomped away earlier only to await Rosalie's arrival somewhere in the parking area of the

apartment complex. During Rosalie's explanation about how the wedding cancellation had

come about, Arty periodically seemed to have only one thing to say.

"No way," he mumbled again for what had to have been the tenth time.

"I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner," Rosalie said. "I wasn't sure how to go about it exactly."

Up to this point Trina thought Rosalie had done very well describing how she had come to

terms with her sexuality. Everyone remained calm. It was obvious Rosalie didn't want to

hurt Arty. Trina briefly allowed herself to wonder about when these two had last been

intimate. Being as Rosalie had never been with a woman before, Trina wondered what could

have possibly made Rosalie draw any type of conclusion about what was right for her in a

sexual sense.

"Anyway," Rosalie continued, "that's basically it. I know I prefer women," she concluded.

"I'm sorry I never realized any of this before you and I became so involved, and I'm sorry

if the broken engagement... well... all of this was a surprise to me as well."

"Involved?" Arty said. "Involved? You were going to be my wife! That's a little more than involved!" He shook his head. "No way. There's no way you're a dyke."

With that said, Trina noticed the change in Rosalie's expression at the mere utterance of

the word "dyke".

"Call it whatever you like," Rosalie said. "The bottom line is that I'm with Trina now."

Arty's head snapped around and he glared at his sister.

"You?" he yelled. "You caused this?"

"She didn't cause anything," Rosalie said, "and please lower your voice."

"What did you do to my girlfriend?" Arty was standing up now and leaning across the table toward Trina. His eyes were wide again and he had a small dab of spittle at the corner of

his mouth. Trina moved her chair back away from him.

"Arty, please," Rosalie said. "Sit down."

"There's no way this is true," Arty said. With a thud, he plopped back down in his chair.

"No fuckin' way."

"It's true," Rosalie said simply.

Arty stood up again only this time he grabbed his crotch. "You liked this too much!" he said, giving his package a firm shake in Rosalie's direction. "No way you're a dyke!"

Trina could see the horror in Rosalie's expression. It was all Trina could do to keep from

laughing. He's a real prize, she thought.

"How dare you," Rosalie seethed. "Get out."

"You're damn right," he said. Arty pointed his finger at Trina in a slow, threatening way and said, "You haven't heard the last of me, you fuckin' bitch."

"Get out," Rosalie said again. "Don't you dare threaten her or me. Do you understand what I'm saying?"

"You made a fool out of me."

"You were a fool before I ever met you," Rosalie said.
