Chapter 12

Two days later, Ali stood before the multi-paned window where she’d been watching for any sign that Quinn had returned. The evening of Bradley’s assault, Quinn and two other men had carried the guard Bradley had disabled and placed him in a carriage. One of the estate’s drivers had sped away with him to find the doctor. The guard was not mortally wounded, but it just proved Bradley’s willingness to remove anyone who got in his way.

She had watched Quinn issue orders to the men who had gathered, and then he turned to his own horse and rode off with two of the men. In search of Bradley Cumberfield. He’d only returned briefly last evening to give his report and check on security at Brookhaven.

If Ali had ever doubted the evil that ran through Bradley, she no longer had any reservations. Bradley was evil through and through. She had no doubts now that he had intentionally cut her face to cause the horrendous scar that ran from her hairline to below her jaw. He’d done it to ruin her life. He may as well have carved his initials there.

But he hadn’t counted on her meeting a man like the Duke of Somerset. He didn’t realize that there was someone as noble and good as Quinn. Someone who could look beyond the ugliness to the goodness inside her.

Ali didn’t question why God had placed Quinn in her path. He simply had. If for no other reason than so she could discover that it was possible for someone to see only her true self.

Ali thought of Quinn and her heart swelled in her breast. Her thoughts rekindled the kisses they’d shared and the blood running through her veins turned warm. Even though she knew it wasn’t possible for them to spend their lives together, the fantasy of living a life with him caused the excitement she felt to magnify a thousand times over. And she said a quick prayer that he would arrive home safe and sound.

She peered down the lane in the hope that she’d see Quinn arrive. She couldn’t explain the relief she felt every day when she saw him. Each time he returned was one more day Quinn was safe from Bradley. And so was she.

“Are you still keeping watch?” Edgar Moore asked when he entered the room.

“His Grace should have returned by now,” Ali answered as she scanned the area again.

“I know you’re worried, Ali, but His Grace isn’t alone. He has several men with him.”

“I know, Papa. But he hasn’t had a good night’s sleep since this whole Bradley mess began. If he doesn’t take the night watch, the minute he finishes dinner, he locks himself away in the study to work on Lindenwood ledgers. He loves Lindenwood and is trying so hard to find a way to save it.”

Ali turned to where her father had taken a seat. “Would you talk to him, Papa? Perhaps you could offer him the money he needs to pay off his creditors.
