As Lola suspected, the sound wasn’t thunder.

Black trucks slammed around the corner of the rear of the laboratory, three of them in total, jet black and highly polished, reflecting the pale light of morning sun. They moved in a blur of motion and crashing of tires over sidewalk, leaping forward, screaming to a halt on the ratty winter grass several yards from where the four scientists stood.

Almost immediately black-uniformed commandos spilled out of the beds of the trucks, planting hands and vaulting from the rear, landing on grass in a clattering rustle of plate armor and weaponry. Some of them wore masks, some of them didn’t, but all of them burst forth from the vehicles, forming a thickened semi-circle in front of the stunned quartet. At the rear of the collection of vehicles, one more lone truck pulled up, this one a military transport with some kind of armored canopy on the back.

The whole process took only moments, and suddenly the two men and two women were blanketed by military operatives, soldiers dressed in dark uniforms, toting rifles and spreading slowly out in front of them.

Lola and Sherize darted nervous glances at each other, taking a step back in unison, uncertain of who these newcomers were or what they wanted. At first, Lola thought that maybe they were American military, reinforcements coming in to save them, to collect their data, celebrate them for saving the world from catastrophe.

It didn’t take long for them to figure out this wasn’t the case. As the commandos slowly spread out ahead of them, they began barking commands at each other in rough, chopped language, a distinct Eastern European dialect that Lola didn’t recognize specifically, but she did recognize it as being foreign. She glanced toward Sherize, who met her eyes, wide and curious.

“What do you want from us?” Dave asked from behind them, stepping around Lola on her left. “We’re just scientists. There’s nothing of any value here.”

The military garbed men glared at him, almost in unison, before one separated from the crowd and approached, striding swift and firm, eyes narrowed. Lola could see the men looking at this person as he walked toward Dave, and he peeled his balaclava from his tan-skinned face, looking him up and down, curiously.

“What is your name?” he asked in somewhat broken English.

Dave stood his ground. “I’m Doctor David Mitchell,” he said. “I work for the Centers of Disease Control and we’re working to try and mitigate the threat of this rampant bacteria.”

The man nodded softly, seemingly understanding what Dave was saying, letting it settle, digesting it slowly.

“And you?” he said, turning toward Sherize.

“Sherize Kendell,” she replied.

“You are also doctor?”

“Not officially,” she replied. “I’m a laboratory analyst. She’s the doctor,” she said, nodding toward Lola.

Lola’s eyes darted back and forth as the man looked at her.

“Doctor Lola Gutierrez,” she said softly. “CDC.” Behind the man, the group of darkly uniformed men held weapons, barrels pointed at downward angles toward the ground. Looking at their faces, she could see
