Mr. Maan bared his teeth in a fake smile.

I stumbled back. So did everyone else.

“I suppose we can tell you,” he said. “We’re no longer studying the moon. We are going to study watermelons instead. Isn’t that correct?”

Mx. Hudson, their eyes still unfocused, nodded. “Watermelons.”

Mr. Maan released his grip. “We’ll see you later.” He and Mx. Hudson left.

“Okay, I know I wasn’t the only one who saw that!” I said.

“Super weird!” said Devlin.

“Did he—did he just take away our moon study?” sputtered Rokshar.

“Uh-oh,” said Malachi. “No one gets in between Rokshar and science.”

“That was proof he’s supernatural,” said Devlin. “No one can glow.”

“He wasn’t glowing,” said Rokshar. “It was the suit.”

“I’m confused,” said Max. “Isn’t Mr. Maan an astrophysicist? Why would he want to stop us from studying the moon? And why does he wear clothes that light up?”

“I think I know!” said Rokshar. “He’s working on a light suit. Remember what I said about the SAD lamps? Light can affect our moods. I think Mr. Maan’s figured out a way to use light to influence people’s thoughts and actions.” Her expression turned grim. “That’s dangerous. He got Mx. Hudson to stop our moon study. What else can he make our teacher do?” She slung her bag over her shoulder. “We need to stop Mr. Maan before it’s too late.”

I thought about Mx. Hudson and worried it was already too late.
