Chapter Thirteen

“The Sox won,” Rachel said, referring to her beloved Boston Red Sox.

“Oh, yeah?”

Rachel frowned. “Ever since they finally won the World Series, no one seems to care whether they win or lose.”

“We care. We just don’t live and die over every game anymore.”

Rachel shrugged and tried to come up with another safe topic to talk about, even though all she could think about was how much she wished she hadn’t gotten so drunk the night of the party. If she hadn’t, maybe she’d have gotten that kiss in and who knew?

Sure, Rach, you’d be talking about wedding plans and how many babies you were going to have together and whether you were going to live in Maine or Rhode Island. If she had gone through with that kiss, Rachel figured that Thad wouldn’t be sitting next to her at all, and suddenly she was glad she’d thrown up instead of thrown herself at him.

They sat next to each other on the rail, close enough so their shoulders knocked together when the boat chopped into a wave. Below, a few of the crew were trying to get some needed sleep. Will would not let anyone get to the point of exhaustion, especially with the stream coming. It was promising to be a faster race than expected and he needed his crew in top form.

“Remember the time it took us more than a week to cross the line?” Rachel asked.

“I remember you refusing to go below to sleep,” Thad said.

“I’m sorry, but the stench of unwashed male bodies wasn’t something that makes a girl want to sleep.” There, she sounded normal, like a normal woman flirting with a man. “If I remember correctly, you were the ripest of the bunch.”

“I was the only one who washed up in the sea water,” Thad said, and Rachel’s cheeks burned red because she remembered that suddenly, the way Thad had stripped down to birthday suit and poured a bucket of water over his head. She remembered every gorgeous detail of his body, the way the water ran in rivulets down his torso, the way he shook his head like a dog and a drop touched her lip and she couldn’t stop herself from darting out her tongue to taste it.

“Oh, yeah,” she said, her voice soft. Thad gave her a sharp look and she looked away, praying he couldn’t read the lust in her eyes. All she had to do was sit next to him and she was aroused. It was a sickness, an obsession. And this year, she was going to do something about it.

“I’m in therapy, you know,” she said abruptly.

“Oh?”

“It’s all self-esteem stuff. Beauty on the inside first. It’s a package, you know? You can’t lose weight and get in shape if you still hate the person inside.”

Thad grunted. “Makes sense. But you don’t really hate yourself, do you?”

“Maybe not hate. Dislike, I suppose. I am painfully shy.”

“Not when you drink,” he said, grinning.

“Ha ha. Wouldn’t you say that’s a problem
