Chapter 11

FATE

THE GALAXY WORLD is as beautiful as ever. But lonely. Oh, so lonely.

I peer around the flickering stars, letting them light up my skin in their ethereal glow. I look around for the void, the door back to the living, but all I see is an endless array of stars. It’s in this moment I realize that maybe there’s no going back for me.

But Luka.

Luka will live on without you...

“I can’t live on if something were to happen to you.” The memory hits me like a cool current, dragging me away from the beautiful stars I’ve grown familiar with and back to the cabin in the woods that feels like home. Feels like Luka and life and everything I know I love, even if it’s all still foggy pieces waiting for me to snap together as best as I can.

“You’re being dramatic,” Luka says from the couch next to me. My legs drape over his, and he rests his hands on my knees. His voice circles me, hugging me in an emotion that seems to be attached to every memory involving him, but it’s hard to place. I enjoy it and despise it at once. The feeling leaves my heart racing and the rest of me a ball of nerves—good ones.

I turn and look at him, the room fuzzy around us as I search his dark eyes. “And you’re not being serious. If you can’t find the way in, you’ll never find the way out without me. Now concentrate.”

He smirks, his pouty lips just begging for my attention. If I could reach out and graze my finger across them, I would. “That look you’re giving me is making it incredibly difficult.”

Sighing, I cover my eyes with my hands. I listen to the sound of Luka’s quiet breathing without looking at him. I really, really want to look at him, but I can’t. The memory won’t allow it.

“Give me your hand,” I say after a long moment of listening to Luka.

His fingers lace through mine, the recollection feeling utterly real. But I’m not in control. I can’t change the past. I can only watch through my eyes like a spy of sorts.

Bringing his hand up, I press his palm to my chest.

“Now you’re making it impossible,” he says. I can hear the smile in his voice, which makes my heart beat faster.

“If you keep messing around, I’ll go without you,” I say.

“You wouldn’t.”

“Wait for it. Wait for the pause between heart beats.”

“Your heart’s racing.”

“I can still get in. Now let’s go.”

“Skye? Skye, where are you?” The sound of Luka’s voice in my mind pulls me from the memory, leaving me yearning to be back in the cabin, on the couch, in a moment that felt important.

“Skye, I feel you. Answer me.”

“I’m right here,” I say, my voice sounding through the vast galaxy. “Where are you?”

“Please, don’t leave me, okay. Just hold on.”

“How are you talking to me? I don’t see you. Are you...?”

“I’m alive, and I can’t stay long. They’ll know.
