Asher’s knuckles throbbed from where they had connected with Caspian’s face. He flexed them inside the pocket of his hoodie—tender but not broken, and glared at the asshole in question. Caspian sat against a concrete pillar, oblivious to the bruise blooming along his jaw, eyes closed, his fingers resting loosely on the curved blade in his lap.

Asher was not fooled. The first punch had been as much a surprise to him as it had been to Caspian. He wouldn’t get a second shot. So he started pacing instead, broken glass crackling under his boots. Eden and Willa had been gone too long. Mother of Darkness, what had she been thinking?

Caspian cracked one eye. “Bloody hell, would you cut that out.”

“Your pet bird dragged Willa out the freakin’ window. For all we know, they could both be dead right now.”

“They aren’t dead. Birds can fly, you idiot. Eden won’t hurt her.”

Asher slid down the office wall and seethed in Caspian’s general direction. The Hunter, or whatever the hell he was, didn’t look so good. His eyes were hollow, and he seemed to have misplaced his normal swagger, as if betraying Willa might have mattered more than he’d like to admit.

Well, fuck him.

Asher knew plenty of guys like Caspian. The Golden Boy only cared about the people he destroyed if the consequences spoiled his plans. There was not enough room in his ego for guilt. Or love.

“You tried to kill me,” Asher said, trying for accusatory and ending up somewhere around petulant.

Caspian rolled his head in Asher’s direction, his hand still resting on the knife like some sort of damn taunt. The rising sun turned his hair into spun gold, the V of his vest dipping just low enough to show off his movie star chest. “I’ve got bad news for you friend.”

Asher felt every muscle in his body pull taught. “Don’t fucking call me that.”

Caspian’s lips curved into the shape of a smile. “I know you think you are important—the best friend—her protector. But almost dying was your only purpose here. You should go. Save yourself.”

Around them, the light of day had twisted the Market floor into something small and sad—just a few scattered booths on a dirty concrete floor. Asher gritted his teeth and contemplated Caspian’s murder. “I’m not leaving without Willa.”

The Hunter shrugged, his head lolling away again. He closed his eyes again. “She doesn’t need you, best friend—if she ever did at all.”

Asher pushed himself to his feet, restlessness trying to gnaw its way out of his chest. Willa better get back here soon because he couldn’t stand to be in the presence of this self-righteous, egotistical, dick weasel for one more—

Eden and Willa blinked into existence, scraps of trash and snow swirling around them. Willa’s cheeks were rosy, the cold wind whipping her dark hair as she stepped out of the broken air. She shot him a crooked half-smile. He sucked in a breath. She was beautiful, the way a wild thing is beautiful when caught in a moment of stillness.
