1 âEcarts dâidentitéâ is a play on the French carte dâidentité (ID card), by which I mean to evoke a distancing from, or unmapping of, fixed images of identity. Beur writers Azouz Begag and Abdellatif Chaouite have similarly evoked this concept in their book, Ecarts dâidentité (Paris: Seuil, 1990). They define âecart dâidentitéâ as a misuse or movement away from identity, or, more particularly, as the difference in color between a green passport and a yellow ID card (10).
