Chapter Nine

Harvey’s stomach clenched a little as he glanced toward his office. He really had thought Joey would come down and join him after a little while and was kind of bummed that he didn’t. He liked spending time with the gorgeous little man. Joey had a wicked sense of humor and he was smarter than crap, even if everything he said had to be written out on a pad of paper.

He still got his point across.

Harvey was actually hoping to spend more time with Joey in the future, getting to know him better, just under controlled conditions. Under supervision sounded frustrating but not necessarily a bad idea. He had to do something that would prevent him from constantly wanting to touch the man.

Okay, honestly, Harvey knew that would never happen, which was exactly why he needed a chaperone. He needed someone to stand there and possibly smack him upside the head when his desire for Joey overrode his common sense.

Harvey’s shoulders heaved as he stared down at his hands, wiping them on a towel. If he was honest, at least with himself, his desire for Joey wasn’t going to go away any time soon, if ever. He had spent enough time with the man to know that Joey was pretty much everything Harvey had dreamed of, right down to his cute little toes.

He just wasn’t sure Joey was ready for someone like him. He was rough around the edges and then some. Having spent a majority of his life running the streets, Harvey knew more about fighting than he did about being gentle.

And Joey needed gentle.

Harvey was more likely to punch someone—or throw them through a window—than he was to try and work things out in a peaceful manner. He owned a bar that, while it was mostly locals just burning off steam, could get rowdy on occasion. He’d run with a motorcycle club for several years, earning the rank of first enforcer.

No, sending Joey to stay with the sheriff was the best thing he could do for that man. It was the only thing he could do. Joey deserved to have a life that wasn’t filled with the threat of danger or violence, and that was pretty much all Harvey knew.

A scream ripped through the air, cutting through the music like the edge of a knife. Harvey’s eyes snapped to the front of the bar where a commotion seemed to be happening. He dropped the towel on the bar top and hurried out from behind the bar, racing toward the front door.

“Stand back!” he shouted when he spotted the bleeding man lying on the floor. Harvey dropped to his knees beside the man, unsure of where to touch him or even if he should. God, he prayed this wasn’t a knife fight.

The man on the floor was cradling his hand to his chest, breathing heavily. He had a swollen cheek and dried blood on the side of his face.

“What happened?” Harvey tried to ask in a non-threatening voice.

“Crash.” The man winced as he moved, pulling his injured hand up farther.
