Eddie was on morning patrol when a call came in that a body had been found. He reached the McDonald’s and there he observed the corpse of a beautiful girl dressed in a bright yellow dress that was saturated with blood. He waited for the homicide detectives and he sealed the area off with yellow police tape.

While he waited for the detectives, he called Chuck.

“Hey, man, you told me last night that the girl got on a bus to Texas. What was she wearing?”

“A bright yellow dress with a string of white pearls on her neck. Why?”

Eddie looked at the corpse with a string of white pearls around her neck.

“Chuck, I’m sorry to tell you, but she didn’t make it. I’m here with her body. She was slashed up and had her throat slit.”

“Where?” Chuck demanded.

Chuck arrived in ten minutes. He walked past Eddie and took one look and knew it was Ariana.

“That’s her. They’re all going to die,” he said to Eddie and walked off.

An hour later, Eddie exited the Starbucks and headed for his apartment. He thought about the thing that Chuck had done and the intensity of his hatred at the crime scene. His actions—really stupid, really brave—would probably get him killed. On the other hand, if he planned to succeed, and he just might with his skill set from his military training, he could become a game changer.

As he entered his car, his cell chirped. He knew who that would be from the preprogrammed sound that emanated from the phone based on the number or name of the incoming call. It was from someone he knew he would have to answer. He realized that he might be able to guess most of what the man wanted.

A few years before, Ramon Escobar had been his lover. They’d eventually split up with no hard feelings, but Eddie was always in his debt because of his need for extra money to carry on his lifestyle. Never a substantial amount, usually a few hundred dollars—nothing that would raise any eyebrows at the office, but Ramon continued to render this help. In return, Eddie would provide him information on the criminal activities in the area. He never knew for sure if Ramon ran some sort of organization or was just a part of a larger syndicate, but he suspected that he was in charge. Last year he had given Eddie a large amount of money and told him to hide it offshore. He’d taken it with him on his scuba diving vacation in the Caribbean. There he’d opened a bank account to stash the money.

“Ramon, good to hear from you. How are things?”

“Great. I’m in a hurry. I need to get your take on what happened. I hear Kingpin got wasted and a new man is in town. Their organization is taking losses in girls and money.”

“News travels fast. That just happened last night. He also had a hooker killed, and she was a friend of my buddy. He’s going to go on the warpath against that organization.
