HECKINGHAM † St Gregory

10m/16km W. of Lowestoft

The tower is unusual, strange even: it has a round base, but the medieval upper half is mostly octagonal and looks very much like an afterthought. Most of the church, though, is essentially Norman, most notably the S. doorway, with excellently carved arched orders, very like its neighbour at Hales.

HEYDON † St Peter and St Paul

11m/18km S.W. of Cromer

OS TG114274 GPS 52.8028N, 1.1347E

The church is set in a delightful Norfolk estate village, and is entered through a S. porch that’s vaulted, with carved bosses of Evangelists and angels – one or two like stone bats hanging from the roof – and a parvise above. The interior is mostly 17th-century, with a large squire’s pew partially obscuring the chancel. The tomb chest in the N. aisle of Erasmus Earl is staggering: black, massive, some 12 by 6 foot in dimension. There are a number of wall-paintings here, most notably in the N. aisle, on themes of mortality: in the S. aisle is another good wall-painting showing the Annunciation, Nativity, the Magi bearing gifts and the Presentation at the Temple.
