Chapter Thirty-One

Xayla

I pack everything in my room, knowing I will not be staying here, even though I will be back. I will not leave Thomas completely. He is my friend, and I will not abandon him. Once I am sufficiently packed up, I head out to the main entrance room and find Elliott standing with his hand out to take my bag.

“I got it. Did you bring a car?” I ask, not looking back.

“Yes. Yes, ma’am,” he stammers.

I stopped in my tracks, turning to him. “Do I make you nervous?” I inquire, not sure he will answer.

“No, ma’am.” He bows his head.

Hmm. Elliott did not act this way when I met him at the office building. He states now that I do not make him nervous, but he cannot seem to form any complete sentences.

“Is it the police officer that is making you act all strange then?”

He bows his head lower.

“Elliott, look up at me.”

Once he is looking me in the eye, I continue my line of questioning. “My intention is not to get you in trouble, but unfortunately, right now, I need a ride to my car that was left behind when I was brought here.”

I smile at him, hoping he will relax a little. When he doesn’t relax, I get annoyed. I really am not trying to get him in trouble.

“Okay, give me your phone.”

His eyes widen, and he looks more nervous now than ever. He hands it to me. I open it and find the name “Alpha.” I dial it, putting the phone to my ear.

“Elliott, tell me you did not lose track of my Mate.”

I giggle internally. “Nope, bossy pants, I am right here.” I can hear his breathe hitch. “So, listen. Elliott is going to do me a favor and run me out to my car so I can get home tonight. I wanted to be sure he didn’t get on your bad side, so I borrowed his phone to let ya know.” I pause, debating on just hanging the phone up.

“What happened to the phone I gave you that had my number programmed in it?” he asks with an irritated tone.

“That old thing? I think I left it at the love shack. I am sure you can get someone to grab it for ya.” I admit, this thing I got going on with him is a little more fun than I expected. “Anyways”—I pause for dramatic effect—“your boy, Elliott, and I will be leaving now. So, I will see you at the office.”

“At the office?”

“Yes, the office. Elliott agreed to hire me for the position I interviewed for. You know, before all this Mate stuff.” I click my tongue at the end of my sentence, just to fluster him.

“I see,” he states, and I can tell his teeth are clenched together. “It appears I will see you at the office then, darling.”

I click my tongue again. “K, boss.” I hand the phone back to Elliott.

It appears he is getting an earful as he motions me toward the car he came in.
