Shannon leans over the railing and snaps photos of the Seattle ferry plowing its way past her perch on Pier 62 toward Bainbridge Island. Her white sundress flaps and curls with abandon, letting the sea breeze tease her inner thighs. She bats it down with her free hand and looks around, embarrassed. The only people nearby are a couple pressed into the railing a few yards away who look like they’re having a lot more fun than she is. The man has his hand up the woman’s shirt, fondling her breast, and she’s pressing her knee into his groin. Surprised by jealousy, Shannon sneaks a few shots of the couple, the Space Needle erect in the Seattle skyline behind them. They’re oblivious.
Shannon sighs. Her evening plans include some photos down by the water, then a show at the Fifth Avenue Theater. Alone. When her boss at New York magazine told her about the feature on Seattle for the travel section, she jumped on it just to get away, and decided to add a few personal days as well. Her ex-boyfriend wasn’t taking no for an answer, and she thought a little time away would do them both some good. The term boyfriend was a stretch—they had only been dating for a month when he started talking marriage and she called it off. This wasn’t the first time she’d run from someone who wanted to get serious.
Seattle is a lot closer to home than New York, but it feels safe enough—an hour’s drive from the small rural town she grew up in. And it’s a whole different world here in Seattle on a Saturday night: crowds of people walking along the water, riding the new carousel, eating clams on outdoor tables, and enjoying a rare, warm summer night. Her hometown of Duvall is so tiny, you can walk from one end of it to the other in five minutes and pass by one good coffee shop, three decent restaurants, and half a dozen antique stores. Of course, the five-minute walk would take twenty because you’d see a dozen people who’d want to stop and chat.
Until age sixteen, Shannon didn’t mind the close-knit community of Duvall. But then her brother died and everything changed. As soon as she graduated high school, she fled just about as far away as she could, to the busy, anonymous streets of Manhattan.
Shannon looks back at the couple as the man is leaving a trail of kisses down the woman’s neck and into her cleavage. It makes Shannon blush just to watch the public display of affection. She steps away to give them privacy and notices people gathering on the other end of the pier. Camera ready, she heads over to see what’s up.
There’s a juggler at the center of the crowd. She squeezes through to get some good shots. There’s something familiar about the way he throws back his head to get his shoulder-length hair out of his eyes. She zooms in close to get a better look, and gasps.
