“Bend over,” she said.

“I’m sorry?” I replied, rather taken aback.

“I said ‘Bend over.’” Buki looked at me with impatience, a black riding crop poised in midair.

I looked again at her, then at the riding crop. Then I looked around the shop. None of the customers appeared to have noticed, but this was England, and people tend to be polite about such things.

“Ah, Buki, I don’t think that it’s in my job description to get assaulted by colleagues.”

“Suit yourself. I just thought it was worth you experiencing the snap of a riding crop so you could better talk to customers about them. This is the first time we’ve had Hamlet’s Horse Supplies products in, and they’re the best crops money can buy—Pony Club approved ’n’ all.”

I paused. I hadn’t worked at the sex shop very long and still wanted to make a good impression, show myself willing when it came to learning about things that might not appeal to me in particular. But I felt a bit out of my depth. It was true that I hadn’t sold riding crops before, so I needed to learn about them, but I would have preferred to whack one against my own hand to get a feel for them. Surely customers who bought stuff like that knew what they wanted anyway?

“Umm, okay, I guess,” I said unconvincingly. It was a little unorthodox, even for a sex shop, but I made Buki promise not to do it too hard.
