The Three Steps to Following Your Passion without Quitting Your Day Job
Step One: Identify the Aspects You Love about Your Current Position
It is important to discover what you are passionate about in your current job. You should be able to easily identify what you enjoy about your job, what comes easy to you, and what you have mastered, all by just being aware of your daily routine. Observe yourself for a week and take notice of what tasks, projects, or jobs you excel at. Which tasks or activities do you finish much faster than others? What responsibilities at work cause time to fly? Another clue may be areas of your work where you are considered an expert and other employees come to you for help and assistance.
Passion often comes from mastery. People are passionate about what they are good at. (Except for golf, which is an exception to this rule.) Ask children if they enjoy practicing the piano, and they will tell you they hate it. But once they master a difficult piece, perform it, and receive a round of applause, all of a sudden they enjoy practicing and playing the piano. It is called mastery-induced passion. Over the years, numerous individuals who previously felt they needed a change in their job, decided to stay and focus on mastering their current job. In so doing, they felt a renewed sense of fulfillment and satisfaction in a job they had previously disliked.
If you have been unable to determine what you love about your job, what you feel passionate about in your work, or what you excel in, then give yourself a full week of observation time. If, after a week of observing, all you come up with is your passion for your lunch hour, then you need to ask a co-worker who knows you well or someone you trust, to give you some feedback that is honest and forthright. Let me share an example to get your brain in the mode to recognize your talents and what you are passionate about.
My first job out of college was working for a pharmaceutical company. I am to this day deeply grateful to Woody (yes, he is from the South!) who gave me the opportunity to work for a Fortune 100 company. This job meant I could start paying off my student loans and supporting my family. Corporate America was new and exciting and I loved every part of it.
After a few years passed and I had been promoted, I began noticing aspects of the job that I didn't enjoy: tasks that I dreaded to work on and only completed because I knew I would get in trouble if I didn't finish them on time. I hated the paperwork, the weekly reports, and expense sheets. I would rather pull my teeth out than look over all the numbers on the reports. Also, the conference calls were painful and seemed to last much longer than was needed.
On the flip side, I began to notice what I loved about my job.
