Getting there: From the Central Oregon town of Sisters on U.S. Highway 20, drive 14 miles west on Oregon Route 242, the McKenzie Pass Highway, toward McKenzie Pass. Turn left (south) onto a rough red-cinder road marked for Lava Camp. Follow this road 0.3 mile, then bear right and continue 0.1 mile to the far end of this small and relatively undeveloped, waterless campground. The trailhead is at the end of this looped road.

This hike is among the most beautiful in Oregon’s high Cascades—a region chock-full of scenic hikes. It visits two lakes, has close encounters with one of the youngest lava flows in the Cascades (including a short stretch of the hike where booties are in order if your dog is tender-footed), and provides an intimate view of one of the Cascades’ longest glaciers—or, at least, the moraine-rimmed valley where Collier Glacier used to be. All this in a 7-mile walk on well-maintained and easy-to-follow trails with no lung-numbing climbs. What hiker and dog could ask for more?
