Wind Creek is touted as the largest state-run campground in the country, and it’s hard to argue that. The park has 586 improved campsites with 157 on the banks of Wind Creek, a finger of Lake Martin. Prices range from $22 per night Sun through Thurs, $25 Fri, Sat, and holidays; add $3 for waterfront sites. There is a $4.50 transaction fee plus tax, and a 3.5 percent lodging fee. Yes, you can now tent camp atop Flagg Mountain, the southernmost mountain over 1,000 feet in the Appalachians. As of this writing, camping is free. All that is requested is a donation to help maintain the cabins, tower, and trails. You must also check in with the caretaker, “Nimblewill Nomad,” before pitching camp.
