Connecticut River Valley

The Connecticut River Valley is a collection of towns built along the longest river in New England. Many of these towns boomed as tourist destinations following the Industrial Revolution but fell out of favor as air travel became widespread.

The towns have retained their charm and character, and they are popular destinations for weekend visits and day trips. Historic accommodations include the Copper Beech Inn, a country inn in nearby Ivoryton, and the Griswold Inn, a historic tavern continuously operated since the 18th century. Alternative transit in the region includes the Chester-Hadlyme ferry, prominently featured in the River Valley Ferry Loop, and the Essex Steam Train.

These rides visit the beach town of Old Saybrook, previously mentioned Chester and Essex, the rural towns of East Haddam and Durham, and the impressive town green of historic Guilford. Mountain bikers will enjoy Millers Pond, a nearby location full of a variety of trails, all around a popular swimming hole.

The second longest ride in the area, the River Valley Ferry Loop, passes through Old Lyme, a town covered in more depth in the New London section, before taking a historic ferry ride over to the quaint waterfront villages of the Connecticut River.

None of these rides go all the way to Middletown, the biggest city in the area, but the area does have some attractive riding, especially west of the picturesque Wesleyan University campus. Check in with Pedal Power in downtown Middletown for guidance and group riding in the area.

The main highway, Route 9, offers a scenic drive through beautiful parts of the region, and mass transit users can easily reach Old Saybrook on the bike-friendly Shoreline East rail line.
