Boat to the grotto

A less strenuous way of reaching the Grotta di Nettuno is by excursion boat from Alghero. The scenic trip takes 2–3 hours; the entrance fee to the cave is not included in the charge for the trip.

Archaeological Sites

Roughly halfway between Alghero and Capo Caccia, a layby provides an excellent view of the Nuraghe di Palmavera (daily May–Sept 9am–7pm, Apr and Oct 9am–6pm, Nov–Mar 10am–2pm; charge), a fortified nuraghic village which was abandoned in the 5th century BC. The remains comprise the principal and original limestone tower (1500–900BC), the secondary tower, ramparts and ‘Meeting Hut’ (900–800BC), and 50 or so circular dwellings, added in the final phase (800–700BC). To the north, on the Alghero–Porto Torres road, the Necropoli diAnghelu Ruju (same hours as Nuraghe di Palmavera; combined ticket available) is an extensive complex of 36 burial chambers, known as domus de janas, dating from the late Neolithic era (3300–2900BC). The size of some of the tombs suggests collective burials and the finds, including female idols, bowls and deposits of shells, mixed with ash and charcoal, are evidence of funerary rituals and feasts.
