Stunning views of Khawr Sham on a Musandam dhow cruise

MUSANDAM

With spectacular mountains plunging into turquoise waters, rocky bays and isolated fishing villages, Musandam is one of the great secrets of Arabia, reckoned by many to be the most beautiful region in Oman. Exploring any part of this remote and rugged peninsula, cut off from the rest of country by part of the UAE, is an adventure whether by land or by sea. Dolphins follow the dhows as they meander through the fjord-like inlets, while eagle-eyed raptors watch the 4x4s as they inch their way up the tortuous mountain bends to see high plateaus, stone houses and ancient rock carvings. Until the early 1990s, the peninsula was a strictly military zone. However, as Oman has gradually opened up to tourism, so has the Musandam, and it has become a popular weekend destination for visitors based in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, just a few hours’ drive away.
