Airports

International, charter and domestic flights to Crete serve the airports at Iráklio (HER), for central and eastern resorts, and Haniá (CHQ) for the western part of the island. The airport at Sitía (JSH), in the far east, only has domestic flights for now; an ambitious expansion of the terminal to accept international ones has stalled for lack of funds.

Iráklio International Airport “Nikos Kazantzakis” is the biggest of all three, and can get horribly crowded at times: there’s a bus servicing the 5km (3 miles) route to and from Platía Eleftherías in the centre of town until late at night. There is also a bus service from Haniá airport (www.chaniaairport.com) the 14km (8.5 miles) to the city, but so infrequently (5–8 daily) that most arrivals take taxis – the only option at Sitía, barring a 1.2km (0.7-miles) downhill walk into town.
