A longtail boat at Phi Phi Don

Separated slightly from the rest of the peninsula by a rocky headland, Hat Ton Sai emits a greater party vibe than the other beaches, with bungalow-style accommodation and sea-facing bars offering cheap drinks, cheap meals, and starlit fire-eating and flame-throwing performances, against a backdrop of reggae music and painted neon signs. This small bay offers amazing views of the open sea, broken in the foreground by a cluster of rocky karsts.

Many of the 650 or so rock-climbing routes across Krabi’s cliffs are around Hat Railay. Views are awe-inspiring, taking in mainland Krabi and extending far out to sea. Experienced climbing guides are available across Railay, but are predominantly located at Hat Ton Sai. Krabi waters are now more accessible to sailors after the first phase of Krabi Boat Lagoon Marina (tel: 0 7565 6017; www.krabiboatlagoon.com ) opened in 2012.
