Cala Ratjada

It’s only 3km (2 miles) from Capdepera to Cala Ratjada (also spelled Rajada), a busy resort built on a grid pattern. It was once the most important fishing harbour on the island, after Palma, but much of the port is now used for leisure and pleasure, as you can see from the boats moored here. There is plenty of accommodation, although much of it is pre-booked by German tour companies; and a rash of fast-food outlets and tourist-tat shops detracts from the atmosphere. However, much of the seafront is attractive, with restaurant tables set among pines and succulents. There is one sandy beach in the centre of town, where good waves attract surfboarders, but most people head to the beaches a little further north. The northernmost one is Cala Mesquida, with beautiful, protected dunes and excellent surfing waves.

The Platja de Son Moll to the south of the resort can be reached via the promenade. Still further south is Sa Font de Sa Cala, named after a freshwater spring that flows directly into the sea. Here, a lovely little beach has been completely overwhelmed by two huge hotel complexes.

On a hill above Cala Ratjada’s harbour, the Jardins Casa March can only be visited by appointment with the tourist office (tel: 971 819 467; www.fundacionbmarch.es), but the impressive modern sculpture displayed there makes it worth the effort.
