Visit Helsinki

Excursions

Helsinki is a small capital city: once you have seen its sights, take a daytrip to soak up Finland’s countryside; visit an atmospheric medieval trading town; or hop across the water to explore Tallinn, a Unesco World Heritage Site.

Fiskars

This attractive 17th-century ironworking village (bruk) makes for a very popular shopping/sightseeing trip from Helsinki. The village is where the Fiskars company, makers of the iconic orange-handled tools, was born. A chuckling river runs in front of a long street of pretty buildings, many designed by Engel himself. Today they form a concentrated pocket of Finnish art and design. Their little outlets, selling pottery, glassware, paper, leather goods, homeware, jewellery, clothing, chocolates and artisanal beer, open from 11am to 5pm in summer (weekends only during the rest of the year).

The Engel-designed Clock Tower building is the centrepiece of the village, containing an exhibition about the Fiskars company and a shop selling Fiskars products. Downriver, you’ll find the 19th-century copper forge and Assembly Hall; while upstream near the lake is Fiskars Museum (Peltorivi 9, tel: 019 237 013; May–Sept daily 11am–5pm; charge; www.fiskarsmuseum.fi), a living-history museum, where costumed workers bring the village’s ironworking history to life.

Mainly, the chief pleasure here lies in soaking up the charming atmosphere, wandering in and out of the studios and workshops, and stopping for cakes and coffee at one of the riverside cafés.
