Chapter 11

‘Not very satisfactory reading, is it, Cormack?’ Pallister demanded, tapping the typed report in front of him angrily.

‘No, sir,’ Cormack replied, standing rigidly at attention in front of the desk.

‘No, sir,’ Pallister echoed mockingly. ‘Three dead at the warehouse - three, Cormack - and absolutely nothing to show for it. We couldn’t even talk to their casualties - by the time we got there, they’d been taken away by their companions.’

Only to be expected, wasn’t it? Cormack thought, but said nothing.

‘How many dead is that now, Cormack?’ Pallister demanded. ‘Logan, Mohrer, the two men in the car, Fairhurst and two more last night - seven, isn’t it? Of which you personally have killed five... Are you some kind of psychopath, Cormack? This isn’t a game of Cowboys and Indians, you know - or should I say Commandos and Nazis?’ He shook his head angrily. ‘In any case, just what the devil were you thinking of, going to meet Fairhurst on your own, with no support whatsoever?’

‘There was no time to contact anyone, sir,’ Cormack pointed out. ‘Fairhurst made sure of that.’

‘More likely a case of you going off half-cocked - again,’ Pallister countered. ‘You’re a law unto yourself. You decided to act independently, without informing anyone and where did it get you? Nowhere. You are no further forward in your investigation than you were before - but that’s only to be expected, given your record to date, isn’t it? You’re still no closer to finding Kallmann than you were two weeks ago - but there have been three shooting incidents in that time, all of them involving you. All because you tried to do it your way, isn’t that the truth? You’re a maverick, Cormack - and a dangerous, unsuccessful one at that. I will not tolerate Chicago-style gunfights. As of now, I am taking you off this investigation before anybody else gets killed. I am also suspending you from duty and requesting that you be transferred out of Berlin immediately. I don’t think it will be too difficult for you to determine what kind of fitness report will be accompanying you.’ He glared at Cormack, then snapped, ‘That’s all, Cormack. Dismiss.’

***

It was a few minutes after eleven when Cormack returned to his apartment, carelessly throwing his wet raincoat over the back of a chair as he made his way over to the sideboard - and the tray of drinks. It had been raining ever since he had left Headquarters, but he had made no attempt to run to or from the jeep; he simply could not be bothered. He had been like this from the moment he had left Pallister’s office, numbed by a sense of lethargy and despair. For all he knew, he no longer had any right to take the jeep - probably hadn’t, if he had been suspended from duty - but he couldn’t give a damn. Taking the jeep without authorisation was hardly likely to make his situation any worse, he thought bleakly - and what if it did? They could all go shag themselves.
