BENNET

My heart is still sailing after the helicopter ride when I guide Ella to a clearing on the mountain. I’ll admit, there were moments up in the air that I struggled to tear my gaze away from her gorgeous face, delighting in the sights around us. But, above all else, I want to keep her safe. Always.

For phase two, I’ve brought along a basket—complete with candles and a lantern—for a moonlit picnic on Jade Mountain.

I bet even my buddies at Jade Mountain Search & Rescue will have to agree that I did pretty well. For her part, Ella’s eyes are shining with unshed tears as she helps me spread at a quilt and the food.

Pouring us both wine, I unwrap a charcuterie tray and lean on my elbow while I admire Ella. I must have done something really good to deserve having her return to my life after all these years.

“So what brought you back to the PNW?”

She arches her eyebrows at me over her wineglass as she takes a sip. “Are we really doing small talk?”

“It seemed like a better question than, ‘What the heck have you been up to the last twenty-some-odd years?’”

“Fair enough.” She takes another sip of wine and lowers the glass. “I got a twirling scholarship to Arizona State.”

“You stuck with baton?” My heart bursts a little at that. I gave Ella her first baton for her sixth birthday way back when. “And you got a scholarship from it?”

“I bet you had no idea at the time you were going to help me attend college for a song and go to four bowl games when you bought that.”

“No idea. I just thought it was neat and shiny.”

“Anyway, after college, I stayed. I took a job as a dental hygienist while Ian’s father finished dental school. We bought a practice in Phoenix. We had Ian. He started sleeping with one of our interns. Then another. And another. Then . . . ” She pulls her lips tight together and leans toward me. “Would it be okay if we skipped the rest of the story and just ended with: Ian and I are here now?”

“Of course.” I swallow hard, even as I fight the dual feelings of pain for her and anger at her idiot ex.

It’s his loss. She’s mine now, and I intend to take care of her and Ian for as long as she’ll have me. And I’m hoping that’s forever. Because even though she’s only been back a few days, I know that’s where we’re headed. It’s like we’ve been destined for this our whole lives.

A leaf floats by in the air, catching on her shoulder, near the crook of her neck. I lean forward to remove it. As I do, she turns her face, pressing her lips against my hand.

It’s my undoing. Pushing the cheese and meats aside, I dive across the blanket toward her. I bury my fingers into her hair as I crash my mouth against hers. She grips onto the back of my shirt, angling her mouth, opening to mine.
