“Then she called me at one o’clock in the morning,” said Gwen, “and told me that she’d found him.”

“How long have you been on the streets?” I asked Tyrone.

“I moved to Tucson awhile back,” he said. “I was going to school there. Then I came up here to work, earn money, and then go back to Tucson. I was sleeping in a car and walking twelve miles from Washington Park to the Aladdin to work. Finally, I found a place to stay. Everything had kind of settled down. Then I took a leave of absence from work, accumulated time off. When I came back, they told me I was fired. I’ve been on the streets ever since.

“But as I was just explaining to my mom, this is kind of where God put me. I was going to go back to Tucson and go back to school, but for some reason I stayed here.”

“Do you like Las Vegas?”

“The only thing I have a real problem with is the heat. That’s all. I keep telling myself and other people on the streets, ‘Drink fluids and stay on top of your diet.’ People just don’t realize how extreme the heat is here. Living outside, you have to be more aware of the fluids you put into your body. People on the streets don’t drink the right things. They gamble and drink all that free alcohol.”

“Do you drink or do drugs?”

“I’ve drank and I’ve smoked weed. But I’m really careful about the alcohol, because that’s what killed my father. I try not to get under its influence too much, maybe every once in a while on a weekend when I let my hair down a little bit. But that’s OK.”
