“Put that down, right now, Gabe.” Gabe looked up at Luke. He was really mad. Gabe dropped the needle on the kitchen table, back where he had found it. “What did I tell you about touching those…and the other stuff mom and Warren leave out?”

“Like that white stuff?”

“Yes.”

Gabe stared at his feet. “You told me to never touch it…and that the white stuff isn’t powder and that it could hurt me. I’m sorry, Luke, I just…” He felt the tears coming. He knew he shouldn’t have touched it, but he wanted to know why his mom needed these things, that after she put the needle in her arm she acted weird. Sometimes she fell asleep for hours, sometimes days. Why it seemed that every time Warren hurt Luke, afterward more of the white stuff would appear on the table. “I hate her, Luke.”

Luke looked over at their mother’s closed bedroom door. Gabe hadn’t heard a sound coming from her room since last night. He had never told Luke or Brennan how he felt about his own mother, but he didn’t care anymore. He didn’t care if she knew. He hated her. She didn’t care about them. That they didn’t have enough food to eat, that they didn’t go to school, that their clothes were too small, that her boyfriend did things to Luke that made him want to throw up. She just cared about herself.

Luke didn’t defend her. Instead, he pulled Gabe into a hug and held him while he cried.

Gabe’s eyes flew open and he reached for his phone. The dreams were becoming more frequent. He texted his therapist and asked if he could see him. Luckily, Dr. Richards had some room in his schedule.

An hour later he was sitting in his therapist’s waiting room, which as far as waiting rooms went wasn’t that bad. It consisted of six comfy, oversized leather chairs, a coffee table, which always held a bowl of chocolates and a stack of sports magazines. The tone of the room was definitely on the masculine side, absent of candles or soft, soothing music. It made sense considering what Dr. Richards specialized in. It was disturbing to think that there were enough men out there with a history like his, that sexual trauma was so rampant that it kept therapists like Dr. Richards in business.

Gabe’s thoughts were interrupted by a text from Brennan:

How did your date go?

Brennan never asked him about his personal life. Ever.

Gabe didn’t want to ignore his brother, especially since his date had been at his restaurant. He responded:

We won’t be going out again.

The press of the send button had him sick to his stomach because all he could envision right now was Devan on the sidewalk outside of his house, her looking as tired as him, blood streaming down her leg, her eyes red-rimmed and swollen, her arms crossed over her chest and asking him questions she deserved real answers to.

Not the lame answer he had given her.

I can’t.

He cringed. She deserved more.
